June C. Ninnemann, Chicago branch manager of SeniorBridge Family Cos., a New York-based geriatric care management company and provider of home care services, estimates half of the elderly patients her company serves suffer from some form of dementia, which is especially hard for relatives to handle.

"People understand physical disease or frailty," but behavioral problems are more difficult, says Ms. Ninnemann. "Their behavior is confusing, and you don't get the normal 'thanks for helping me.' You get anger and resistance."

Not all requests are so dire. Some families use care managers to help move loved ones to another part of the country or to straighten out medical bills. Others want to make sure their relatives can get to the country club or retirement center to maintain a social life after losing driver's licenses.
