Is it the Blues or Depression?

by Rona S. Bartelstone, LCSW, MSW, CMC, Senior Vice President of Care Management

Don’t let a fall ruin the holiday season. The following most often cause falls:

- Health problems, such as impaired balance, confusion and depression or sensory losses

- Medication errors, especially when anticonvulsive or anti-anxiety medications are part of the normal regimen

- Improper use of assistive devices such as walkers and canes

- Safety issues in the home such as loose rugs, wires and spilled liquids

To ensure safety, consider these tips:

  1. If a person suffers from confusion, disorientation or impulsive behaviors, provide “stand-by” safety, especially when the person changes position from lying down or sitting to standing.
  2. There may be an inner ear problem that causes a sense of imbalance. This should be checked if someone is prone to falls, as it can be treated with retraining, strengthening and learning to compensate for losses.
  3. Good lighting without glare can help to prevent falls from changes in the floor surface and obstacles that may not be apparent. Clearly mark and light any changes in the level of the walking surface.
  4. Loud noises and holiday decorations can create additional confusion for someone with hearing loss and disorientation. Keep things simple and quiet.
  5. Keep a list of all medications handy along with the schedule for when they should be taken.
  6. Pay attention to foods and other medications that could negatively interact with the person’s normal medication regimen.
  7. People sometimes assume that using a walker or a cane is safe, but a device that is not at the proper height or is used incorrectly can do more harm than good. Have assistive devices reviewed by a physical therapist and make sure the person is properly trained to use it.
  8. Remove clutter, loose rugs and open wires or extension cords to create safe pathways in the home.
  9. Create easy access to toileting facilities, especially if the person suffers from incontinence or urgency.
  10. Make sure that shower facilities have safety rails, a non-skid surface and a shower seat.

Safety first will make the holiday season healthier and, therefore, happier.
